Formula 1 News: Mercedes’ Spanish Grand Prix Upgrade Mystery Unraveled

As the Formula 1 calendar enters its next European phase, the Spanish Grand Prix has brought forth an intriguing development. According to official FIA documents, Mercedes has surprisingly brought no changes to its car, contradicting expectations of significant upgrades for the Barcelona race.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had previously hinted at new parts being introduced for this race, stating, “Directionally we seem to be adding performance every weekend and we have new stuff coming also, new parts coming in Barcelona that should help us.” However, the FIA’s ‘Car Presentation Submissions’ document failed to mention any upgrades, sparking curiosity among fans and rivals alike.

Motorsport.com later revealed that the main element of the upgrade package for Spain was a new floor, a critical performance element in current F1 cars. Normally, the introduction of new parts would be formally notified to rival teams and the media on Friday morning. However, Mercedes’ submission did not feature the new floor, leading to speculation about potential delays or setbacks.

Formula 1 today, however, it has been clarified that Mercedes did indeed introduce its new floor, but without needing to notify the FIA. The reason lies in the specifics of the rulebook. Article 19.1 c) of F1’s Sporting Regulations requires teams to provide a summary document listing new ‘aerodynamic and bodywork’ components, which does not apply to the new floor.

The new floor introduced by Mercedes is a lighter version of its previous design, with no changes to its profile or aerodynamic shape. As a result, it is officially identical to its predecessor, exempting the team from notifying the FIA. This weight-saving gain is expected to bring a performance uplift, particularly at a track like Barcelona, which is critical for aero and car dynamics.
