Formula 1 News: Mick Schumacher Set to Test Alpine F1 Car as Team Evaluates 2025 Driver Options
In a move that could potentially shake up the 2025 Formula 1 driver lineup, Mick Schumacher is scheduled to test an Alpine Formula 1 car next week, as the French team continues to explore its options for the upcoming season. This development comes on the heels of Alpine’s announcement earlier this month that it would be parting ways with Esteban Ocon at the end of the current season, while teammate Pierre Gasly’s contract is also set to expire after 2024.
According to Motorsport.com, Alpine has emerged as a strong contender to secure the services of Carlos Sainz for next year, although the Spaniard is also considering offers from Sauber/Audi and Williams. Meanwhile, Alpine’s new consultant Flavio Briatore has hinted at his preferences for the team’s 2025 driver lineup, stating that Gasly is doing his job “well” and suggesting that the team may consider pairing him with a young or experienced driver.
Schumacher, who lost his Haas seat after 2023 and is currently serving as a Mercedes reserve, will have the opportunity to showcase his skills as a potential candidate on July 3, when he will participate in a test day in an A522 from the 2022 season at Paul Ricard.
Interestingly, Schumacher is already associated with Alpine through its Hypercar program in the World Endurance Championship, where he has been racing alongside sportscar stalwarts Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxiviere.
While Gasly is expected to remain with Alpine, Motorsport-Total.com reports that his retention is not a guarantee, as he is also being considered by Audi boss Andrea Seidl for a potential drive should Sainz opt to go elsewhere. Red Bull junior Liam Lawson is another candidate being eyed for the Sauber/Audi drive, as the team prepares for its transformation into Audi in 2026.
Schumacher will not be the only young driver to get behind the wheel of the A522 during the Le Castellet test, as Alpine’s Australian test driver Jack Doohan is also scheduled to participate. With Sainz still in the mix, it’s far from certain that Alpine will make a decision between Schumacher and Doohan following the Paul Ricard test, leaving the Formula 1 community eagerly awaiting the team’s next move.
