Formula 1 Accelerates Sustainability and Inclusivity Efforts at the Italian Grand Prix
Embracing an Eco-Friendly Future
As the Italian Grand Prix weekend gets underway, Formula 1 is taking significant strides towards achieving its ambitious Sustainability Strategy, introduced in 2019, which aims to reach Net Zero by 2030. This comprehensive strategy not only focuses on reducing the sport’s environmental footprint but also seeks to create a more diverse and inclusive community.
One of the key initiatives is the expansion of the low-carbon energy generation system, which has been successfully trialed in Austria and Hungary. Through a partnership with Aggreko, this innovative system will be deployed at every European Grand Prix from 2025, significantly reducing carbon emissions by over 90%. The system will power critical operational areas, including the Pit Lane, Paddock, and International TV Compound.
“This initiative is a significant step forward in our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of Formula 1,” said a senior official.
Reforestation and Community Engagement
In another significant move, the Monza circuit is undertaking a massive reforestation effort, having planted over 8,000 trees in just one year. This initiative follows a devastating thunderstorm that destroyed multiple trees across the circuit forest area in 2023. The Forestry Police have also generously donated trees to represent each Formula 1 driver. Furthermore, the circuit has creatively repurposed fallen trees into water fountains and benches across the Fan Zone.
Formula 1 is also prioritizing community awareness and engagement throughout the weekend. In collaboration with LILT Milano Monza e Brianza, solar-powered sunscreen dispensers have been set up alongside skin cancer information points. Additionally, the circuit has partnered with local organizations that support the upskilling of individuals with physical and mental disabilities, including PizzaAut and AZALEA, which will provide fresh pizzas and floral decorations across the weekend.
Enhancing the Fan Experience
To enhance the fan experience, multiple accessibility improvements have been made across the circuit. These include modified circuit tunnels with ramps, increased accessible grandstands, Fan Zone accessibility activations, and viewing platforms. The Monza App now also features a dedicated accessibility section. The Awabots will also return, giving young people from San Gerado Hospital and Maria Letizia Verga Foundation the opportunity to virtually explore the paddock and meet their Formula 1 heroes.
Finally, Formula 1 is promoting sustainability through a water refill initiative, with 150 taps providing free water across the circuit, a 30% increase since 2023. A reusable cup scheme is also in place, and a food donation program will donate leftover food to local charities, aiming to repurpose food leftovers.
By incorporating these innovative initiatives, Formula 1 is taking a significant step towards achieving its Sustainability Strategy, leaving a lasting legacy of positive change, and creating a more diverse and inclusive sport that reflects the world in which we race.
