Mazepin’s New Chapter: Former Formula 1 Driver Completes GT3 Test in Hungary
Former Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin has made a significant step forward in his racing career, completing a GT3 test in Hungary following the European Union’s decision to lift the sanctions imposed against him earlier this year.
The 25-year-old Russian driver was removed from the EU’s sanction list on March 20, after the European Union’s General Court ruled that there was no concrete evidence linking him to his father Dmitry, who was also sanctioned in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The court concluded that Mazepin’s family ties to his father were not sufficient grounds to maintain the restrictive measures.
With the Council of the EU opting not to appeal the court’s decision, the judgement became effective on May 30, allowing Mazepin to return to the EU for the first time in years. Seizing the opportunity, Mazepin traveled to the new Balton Park Circuit in Hungary to test an LMGT3 car, reportedly a Ferrari 296 GT3, as he continues to explore opportunities in the racing world.
Mazepin expressed his relief and gratitude towards the EU’s decision, stating:
“I am happy the EU has acknowledged that athletes like myself who have no relation to politics should not be placed under sanctions. It is my hope that all athletes who are currently prevented from participating in international competitions due to geopolitics will be returned to their rightful place in the sporting community.”
The Russian driver’s Formula 1 stint was cut short after a single season with Haas in 2021, following the team’s decision to terminate his contract in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The termination also led to the end of Haas’ sponsorship agreement with Uralkali, a Russian fertiliser company run by Mazepin’s father.
The aftermath of the contract termination led to a prolonged legal battle between Haas and Uralkali, with the latter demanding a refund of $13 million. A Swiss arbitration court ruling last month ordered Haas to refund approximately $9 million to Uralkali, with the team also required to pay Mazepin half his salary for the 2022 season.
As Mazepin navigates his new path in racing, his recent GT3 test marks a significant step forward in his journey. With the Formula 1 calendar set to resume soon, fans will be keeping a close eye on Mazepin’s next move in the world of motorsports.
