McLaren Drivers Emphasize ‘Free to Race’ Approach Ahead of Dutch Grand Prix

In the wake of a dramatic qualifying session at the Dutch Grand Prix, McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have emphasized their understanding of the team’s rules when it comes to on-track battles.

Norris stunned the Formula 1 paddock by securing pole position in Zandvoort, while Piastri will start third, with reigning world champion Max Verstappen separating the McLaren duo. The focus has shifted to potential team orders, a hot topic for McLaren recently, after Norris was asked to yield to Piastri for victory in Hungary.

When questioned about supporting Norris in the early stages of the race, Piastri made his intentions clear:

“If I can get myself into the lead, then that works well for me. I think the start is always a good opportunity to make up ground if you can. Obviously, I want to finish as high as I can.

The Australian driver’s ambitious mindset is a testament to McLaren’s ‘two number one drivers‘ approach, as declared by CEO Zak Brown before the summer break. When pressed about the rules of engagement should he and Norris find themselves fighting for the lead, Piastri was unequivocal:

The rules are very, very clear and haven’t changed. We’re free to race each other to try and win.

Norris corroborated his teammate’s statement, citing a simple yet crucial team rule:

There have never been any rules apart from ‘don’t crash into each other’.

This straightforward approach allows both drivers to push for victory, aware of the constructors’ championship stakes.

Starting on pole for the fourth time in his career, Norris will aim to build on his Miami win and challenge Verstappen’s lead in the Formula 1 standings. With a 78-point deficit to make up, Norris acknowledged the importance of strong starts, an area he’s focused on improving.

Formula 1 qualifying results often set the tone for the race, and Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix is poised to be an intense battle, with McLaren’s duo keen to assert their dominance.
