Oscar Piastri Brushes Off Pressure to Follow Lando Norris’ Footsteps to Formula 1 Victory
Piastri Unfazed by Norris’ Success, Focused on Own Performances
Amidst the buzz surrounding his McLaren teammate Lando Norris’ maiden Formula 1 win in Miami last month, Oscar Piastri has downplayed the notion that it’s added pressure on him to secure his first win in the championship. The Australian Formula 1 driver is confident that his recent performances have been promising, despite not quite translating into a win.
Piastri’s Sprint win in Qatar last season marked McLaren’s first victory since Monza 2021, when he outpaced Max Verstappen and Norris. Meanwhile, Norris finally ended his wait for a top-step podium finish in Miami earlier this season, on his 110th Formula 1 appearance.
“Very little,” Piastri replied ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend when questioned about the pressure to replicate Norris’ achievement.
He emphasized his satisfaction with his recent performances, stating that “sometimes results don’t always reflect the underlying performance.”
Piastri remains focused on the long-term, believing that the wins will come naturally as he continues to perform consistently. “In the last two weekends, with different circumstances, the results could have looked very different, so I’ll just keep doing what I’ve done in the last couple of weekends, and you just got to put yourself in the position to get these results, and yeah, you do that enough, and the odds come in your favour, and it’ll happen.”
As McLaren continues to find its footing as a consistent podium scorer since Piastri’s debut, the Australian driver stressed that his approach to weekends has not undergone a significant shift. “Not massively,” he said when asked if his sophomore season had brought a change in how he tackles weekends.
The Formula 1 standings continue to shape up, with Piastri’s McLaren teammate Lando Norris making strides, and the Australian driver is determined to make his mark. As the Formula 1 calendar unfolds, fans can expect a thrilling season of competition, with Piastri gunning for that elusive first win.
