Formula 1 News: Sergio Perez Hit with Three-Place Grid Penalty for Canadian GP Incident
In the latest development from the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez has been handed a three-place grid drop for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver was involved in a spin at Turn 6, resulting in significant damage to his car’s rear wing. Despite the danger posed by the loose carbon fibre, Perez continued to drive at a reduced pace to the pits, sparking controversy.
“After making contact with the barriers in turn six, the driver continued on track for the remainder of the lap with a significantly damaged car and thereby lost several carbon fibre parts on the way back to the pits.”
Red Bull admitted to instructing Perez to return to the pits in an attempt to avoid a Safety Car situation, which would have erased Max Verstappen’s lead. The stewards deemed this decision a serious safety breach, imposing a fine on the team and the aforementioned grid penalty on Perez.
The stewards emphasized that Red Bull’s actions were motivated by a desire to avoid a Safety Car, which led to the sporting penalty.
Interestingly, the stewards chose not to penalize George Russell and Oscar Piastri for their touch at the last chicane, concluding that neither driver was predominantly to blame.
This development will undoubtedly have significant implications for Perez’s Formula 1 standings, as he looks to bounce back from this setback in the Spanish Grand Prix. Stay tuned for further updates on Formula 1 news and penalty decisions.
