Red Bull’s Flexible Contract with Sergio Perez

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has shed light on the specifics of Sergio Perez’s contract extension with the Formula 1 outfit, hinting at a flexible agreement that favors the team. The announcement, made ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, put an end to speculation surrounding Perez’s future, with many questioning whether he would be replaced by Yuki Tsunoda, Daniel Ricciardo, or Carlos Sainz.

In an interview with Dutch broadcaster Viaplay, Horner discussed the intricacies of Red Bull driver contracts, revealing that Perez’s deal is only guaranteed for a year, contrary to initial reports of a two-year extension.

“They are all Red Bull drivers,” Horner stated. “We have decided to extend Checo for one more year, but in the meantime, we also wanted to exercise the option of Yuki. He is doing great at RB at the moment. So yes, he will stay for another year.”

This admission has sparked further speculation about the nature of Perez’s extension, which is believed to be a one-plus-one contract. This means that the second year of the deal is not guaranteed, leaving Perez’s future with the team uncertain.

Horner’s comments come as Perez struggles to find form, with a Q1 exit and DNF in Canada adding to his woes. The Mexican driver must turn his fortunes around to ensure his place in the team for the 2026 season.

Red Bull, the reigning Formula 1 champions, is not experiencing the same level of dominance this season. The team needs Perez to step up his performance to retain its dual title-winning status. If Perez fails to meet the required standards, Tsunoda’s impressive form and retention within the Red Bull setup could see him promoted at Perez’s expense.

The Tag Heuer Formula 1 calendar continues with the French Grand Prix on July 2, where Perez will be looking to bounce back and secure his future with the team. With the Formula 1 standings still tightly contested, Red Bull will be relying on both Perez and Max Verstappen to deliver strong performances throughout the remainder of the season.
