Oscar Piastri has revealed that the track limits saga, which cost him a front-row start, propelled him to a remarkable second-place finish in the Austrian Grand Prix, boosting his Formula 1 standings. As McLaren continues to pressure Red Bull, Lando Norris’s relentless pursuit of Max Verstappen threatened to disrupt the championship leader’s rhythm at the Red Bull Ring.
Piastri, who initially qualified third, was demoted to seventh on the grid after his fastest lap was disqualified due to a track limits violation at Turn 6. Mercedes’s George Russell capitalized on the Australian’s misfortune, while Piastri faced an uphill battle to make up lost ground.
Reflecting on his Formula 1 news-making performance, Piastri admitted, “I think I’m mostly happy… The first stint didn’t make quite as much progress as I would have liked.” However, the 21-year-old McLaren driver’s pace significantly improved in the subsequent stints, as he extended his pit stops and navigated the challenging Red Bull Ring circuit.
Piastri’s eventful race included a close call at Turn 1, where he narrowly avoided a collision with Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez. Although he sustained minor damage to his car, the Australian driver displayed exceptional composure under pressure, AFP reported.
Piastri’s determination to make amends for his qualifying disappointment was evident as he executed an impressive move on Perez, launching his surge through the field. In the closing stages, he expertly utilized his newer tyres to overtake Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari, securing a crucial second-place finish.
When asked about the track limits incident, Piastri confessed, “Yeah, definitely… I was pretty upset yesterday.” However, he took responsibility for the mistake, acknowledging that it fueled his motivation to push harder in the race.
