IndyCar News: Rahal and Simpson Hit with Grid Penalties for Unapproved Engine Changes Ahead of Detroit Grand Prix
In a significant development ahead of the Detroit Grand Prix, IndyCar has imposed a six-position starting grid penalty on both the No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda of Graham Rahal and the No. 4 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Jack Simpson. The penalty follows unapproved engine changes made by both teams after last weekend’s 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
According to IndyCar’s official release, the teams violated Rule 16.2.3.2., which states that a fifth engine is only eligible to earn engine manufacturer points if a full-season entrant has completed the full season entrant engine mileage with its first four engines. Otherwise, any subsequent engine is considered an unapproved engine change-out, incurring a penalty.
IndyCar’s Rule 16.6.1.2. further clarifies that the penalty for such an infraction is a six-position starting grid penalty on road and street course events, and nine positions at oval events. In this case, Rahal and Simpson will serve their penalties at Sunday’s 100-lap contest on the Streets of downtown Detroit.
