Damon Hill: Red Bull’s Formula 1 Title Hopes Hampered by Perez’s Struggles
In the midst of a thrilling Formula 1 season, 1996 world champion Damon Hill has sounded the alarm for Red Bull, claiming they’ll be battling with a significant disadvantage in the championship fight due to Sergio Perez’s recent struggles. Hill’s comments come on the heels of Perez’s contract extension with Red Bull, which will see the Mexican driver remain with the team alongside Max Verstappen through 2026.
Perez’s recent slump in form has been glaring, with the driver failing to advance to Q3 and scoring a meager four points in the last two rounds. This downturn in performance has coincided with a convergence of the grid, where Ferrari and McLaren have begun to pose a more sustained threat to Red Bull’s dominance. Ferrari’s victory in Monaco, courtesy of Charles Leclerc, has seen Red Bull’s margin in the Constructors’ Championship dwindle to a mere 24 points.
“Don’t forget they [Ferrari and McLaren] have both got two drivers who can attack,” Hill emphasized on the F1 Nation podcast. “I’m not sure you can say that of Checo. [They’re] a little bit one-legged at the moment, Red Bull, if they want to defend.”
Hill’s sentiments were echoed by McLaren’s Lando Norris, who argued in Monaco that his team and Ferrari boast two equal drivers, allowing them to mount a stronger challenge.
“There’s plenty of opportunities for us, and we know we still have some things coming in the future,” Norris said. “And if things turn around, then we can easily start to come back at some of the teams, you know.”
With the Formula 1 schedule heating up, Hill’s comments serve as a stark reminder that Red Bull’s fortunes are far from guaranteed. As the battle for the Formula 1 standings intensifies, Hill’s words will undoubtedly spark debate among fans and pundits alike. With the Formula 1 news cycle moving at breakneck speed, one thing is certain โ the title fight is set to be a thrilling ride.
