Max Verstappen Credits Critical Early Pass on Lando Norris for Spanish Grand Prix Triumph

In a post-race interview, Formula 1 star Max Verstappen highlighted the importance of passing Lando Norris at the start of the Spanish Grand Prix, citing it as a “quite critical” moment that ultimately led to his victory. The Red Bull driver, who started second on the grid, launched a stellar getaway to draw alongside Norris, despite being forced onto the grass. This early move proved decisive, as Verstappen then went on to overtake George Russell into the first corner on the third lap, establishing a seven-second advantage in the opening stint.

Verstappen reflected on the start, stating, “Well, it wasn’t straightforward. I mean, at the start, I think it was quite critical to get ahead of Lando, looking at it now.” He acknowledged that the move was not without its challenges, adding, “Of course, at the time, you just try to do what you think is best and how it works out.”

“It was good. I think the first launch was quite okay. And then I got a little bit alongside, alongside. I had to go a little bit on the grass, but then I think George had a double slipstream and had a good run around the outside, which he managed really well.”

As the race unfolded, Norris mounted a late charge, ultimately finishing 2.2 seconds behind Verstappen at the chequered flag. The Red Bull driver acknowledged that his team’s strategy and pit stops played a crucial role in securing the win, saying, “I think we’re quite impressive on the strategy as a team with our pit stops.”

Meanwhile, Norris lamented dropping behind Verstappen on the opening tour, claiming that McLaren had the quickest car and squandered a chance to win the race. In response, Verstappen conceded that Red Bull must unlock more pace to match McLaren’s gains, stating, “Well, from my side, I can only of course speak about myself and I think we are, of course, yeah, struggling a little bit for that outright pace, it felt like.”

The Formula 1 standings now show Verstappen at the top, with this win marking a significant milestone in his campaign. As the season progresses, Red Bull will be keen to build on this success and improve their tyre life, a crucial aspect of Formula 1 today. With the next race on the horizon, Formula 1 news will be closely watching the team’s progress and strategy.
