    Formula 1 to Introduce Active Aerodynamics and Manual Override Engine Mode for Enhanced Overtaking in 2026

    As part of the significant rules overhaul for the next generation of Formula 1 cars, the FIA has been working on innovative active aerodynamics, featuring moveable front and rear wings. The new system is designed to improve overtaking opportunities and enhance the overall racing experience.

    Active Aerodynamics and Modes

    The active rear wing will comprise three elements, while the front wing will have two active flaps. These two wings will work in tandem to ensure the cars remain well-balanced, regardless of the mode they are in. Formula 1 has settled on a plan to introduce two modes for the aerodynamics: a standard high-downforce Z-mode for cornering and a low-drag configuration, called X-mode, for straights, which will help boost top speed.

    According to Jason Somerville, the FIA’s head of aerodynamics, the primary difference between the current DRS system and the plans for the 2026 car lies in their usage around the lap. “Typically, DRS is an overtaking aid, and you grant DRS when you’re within one second of a lead car at specific points. With the 2026 car, we’ll be giving the drivers the ability to switch between the high-downforce and low-drag modes, irrespective of any gaps,” Somerville explained.

    The new system will allow drivers to switch to a low-drag mode at pre-defined points around the lap, giving them an advantage down the straights where they are not grip-limited. As they approach the braking zone, they will switch back to the high-downforce mode. Each car will have the ability to switch between these two modes, adjusting the rear wing and readjusting the front wing.

    Manual Override Engine Mode

    The FIA has also introduced a manual override engine mode to further enhance overtaking opportunities. This system will provide an extra boost of power, giving the following driver a chance to pass the car ahead. The energy deployment of a leading car will taper off after 290km/h, reaching zero at 355km/h, while the following car will be able to benefit from an MGU-K override that provides 350kW at up to 337km/h with +0.5MJ of extra boost.

    Jan Monchaux, the FIA’s single-seater technical director, explained the logic behind the override system: “Right now, with the DRS, you are behind a car, within a second, that ticks a box, and you are allowed to open your DRS in a straight line. This will not be the case anymore. However, the logic will be the same: I’m close enough to another car, I am given an extra amount of energy for that one lap, which I can deploy any way I want.”

    The introduction of active aerodynamics and the manual override engine mode marks a significant shift in Formula 1’s approach to overtaking, focusing on enhancing the drivers’ ability to make passes without relying solely on DRS. With these new features, the 2026 Formula 1 season is shaping up to be an exciting and unpredictable year for fans of the sport.
