Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has identified the team’s biggest challenge ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix: matching McLaren’s exceptional tyre management and end-of-stint pace. With Ferrari now leading Red Bull in the constructors’ standings, the Austrian outfit must find a way to outperform their rivals and stay in the hunt for the title.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has voiced concerns about the team’s ongoing struggles with the balance of their RB20 Formula 1 car, which has put world championship leader Max Verstappen’s title hopes in jeopardy. Verstappen, who has been dominant in the past, feels that development directions taken by the team over the past 12 months have triggered a downturn in form, leaving him fearing he may lose this year’s title.

McLaren has given the strongest indication yet that it is now prepared to fully support Lando Norris’ Formula 1 title bid, despite previously being hesitant to introduce team orders. With eight races remaining in the season, the team recognizes the growing importance of maximizing Norris’ points-scoring opportunities to close the 62-point gap with championship leader Max Verstappen.

Red Bull Racing’s balance woes continued in Italian Grand Prix qualifying, with the team’s lack of a bespoke Monza wing setup proving to be a major factor in their slower speeds compared to rivals like Fernando Alonso and Lando Norris. The team’s decision to trim down its existing low-downforce wing instead of creating a specialized solution was influenced by cost cap constraints and limited CFD and wind tunnel resources.

As the 2023 Formula 1 season reaches a critical juncture, McLaren is well aware that it requires additional upgrades to its MCL38 car to stay ahead of Red Bull at select tracks on the calendar. Despite Lando Norris’s impressive advantage over Max Verstappen at the Dutch Grand Prix, the team knows it cannot rest on its laurels, especially with the championship fight still closely contested.
