FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 24 Hours of Le Mans Update: Thrilling Racing in the 6th Hour

In the midst of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the 24 Hours of Le Mans has reached its sixth hour, and the #83 AF Corse Ferrari 499P is leading the way. The fourth round of the WEC 2024 season is delivering thrilling racing across three classes: Hypercar, LMP2, and LMGT3.

    Hypercar Class Battle

“Ye Yifei is at the forefront for Ferrari, closely followed by Matt Campbell in the #5 Porsche Penske Motorsport car.”

    LMP2 Class Tight Competition

Lorenzo Fluxa leads the charge in the COOL Racing car in LMP2, while the #10 Vector Sport car trails closely behind.

    LMGT3 Class Intense Rivalry

In LMGT3, Joel Sturm is out in front for Manthey PureRxing, with the #46 Team WRT BMW hot on their heels.

The Hyperpole session on Thursday, June 13, set the stage for the grid, with the #6 Porsche Penske Motorsport car snatching pole position in the final lap. However, due to a five-place grid penalty, the #2 Cadillac Racing car will start from seventh, thanks to Earl Bamber being deemed responsible for the dramatic crash at the 6 Hours of Spa.

As the race unfolded, the #50 Ferrari 499P made a significant move on Laurens Vanthoor in the #6 Porsche on the opening lap at Indianapolis. The #51 Ferrari soon followed, relegating the pole-sitting Porsche to third. The #3 Cadillac, driven by Sébastian Bourdais, clung to the group, applying pressure from fourth.

In LMGT3, Inception Racing led the way, with Manthey PureRxing dropping down to eighth. The rapid #77 Ford Mustang LMGT3 made its way up to second and battled hard with the McLaren through the first pit stop session.

As the first 6 hours came to a close, the #83 AF Corse Ferrari held a comfortable lead, with Ye Yifei and Matt Campbell locked in a fierce battle. The WEC 2024 season’s fourth round has already seen over 10,000 overtakes, and with 18 hours still to go, this race is far from over.

Stay tuned for The Checkered Flag’s next report on Sunday, June 16, which will cover the overnight action at the gripping 24 Hours of Le Mans. The FIA WEC calendar 2023 may have already reached its midpoint, but the excitement is only just beginning.
