Formula 1 News: Russell Praises Mercedes’ Upgrades Ahead of British Grand Prix

George Russell has acknowledged the incredible job Mercedes has done with their recent upgrades, as they gear up for the highly anticipated British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend. The racing driver praised his team’s efforts, stating that they have been “gifted a race victory” in Austria, their first win since Brazil 2022.

The Formula 1 calendar has seen an intense battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, with tensions rising after their collision in Austria. Despite a 10-second penalty, Verstappen finished in the points, while Norris was forced to retire. The two drivers have been involved in a friendly rivalry, both on and off the track, with their padel games outside F1 now in question.

This weekend, the Formula 1 news focus shifts to Silverstone, where temperatures are expected to remain cool, ranging from 17-18°C, with scattered showers predicted across the weekend. The last 10 laps of the Austrian Grand Prix saw Russell and Mercedes take the win, with Oscar Piastri earning his fourth podium alongside Carlos Sainz’s fifth of the year.

“I nearly crashed out of the lead when Mercedes’ team boss Toto Wolff screamed encouragement over the pit-to-car radio.”

In the Formula 1 qualifying session, Norris has labelled Verstappen’s defending as “stupid” and “reckless,” and warned that he will lose respect for the three-time world champion if he claims innocence in their collision. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella believes the incident is a result of Verstappen’s driving style going unpunished during his title battle with Lewis Hamilton in 2021.

Looking ahead to the British Grand Prix, the preview is available to listen to on the latest podcast episode. Silverstone, the iconic track that has hosted the inaugural grand prix in 1950, has undergone many changes over the years. However, the beloved corners of Maggots, Beckets, and Abbey remain fan favorites. With 52 laps of 5.8km, the total distance stands at 306km. Verstappen holds the lap record with a time of 1:27.097, set in 2020.

Hamilton is the King of Silverstone, boasting an impressive eight wins (2008, 2014-2017, 2019-2021). Among the current grid, Verstappen (2023), Sainz (2022), and Fernando Alonso (2011) have all won here. Hamilton also holds the most poles with seven (2007, 2013, 2015-2018, 2020).

According to Formula 1 today, the top contenders for the win are Norris or Verstappen. McLaren’s recent upgrades have been impressive, but Verstappen’s Red Bull has been the benchmark in most places. Russell and Hamilton will also be vying for a win, given Mercedes’ steady improvements.
