Formula 1 2026: FIA Unveils Revolutionary ‘Nimble Car’ Concept Ahead of Canadian Grand Prix
In anticipation of the Canadian Grand Prix, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has revealed the key details of the highly anticipated ‘nimble car’ concept, set to debut alongside the new power units and mandatory use of fully sustainable fuel in 2026.
Key Features of the Redesigned Formula 1 Cars
- Active aero: The cars will feature active aerodynamics to enhance performance.
- Weight reduction: The cars will be 30kg lighter, improving agility and handling.
- Shorter and narrower design: The wheelbase will be reduced from 3600mm to 3400mm, and the width from 2000mm to 1900mm. The maximum floor width will also be decreased by 150mm.
- Tyre modifications: The front tyres will be 25mm narrower, and the rears 30mm narrower, while maintaining grip levels.
- Aerodynamic overhaul: Downforce will be reduced by 30%, and drag by 55%, promoting better racing and reducing the negative impact of dirty air.
- Narrower front wing
- Removal of front wheel arches
- In-washing wheel wake control boards
- Three-element active rear wing with simplified endplates and the removal of the lower beam wing
Hidden Upgrades
- Partially flat floor and lower-powered diffuser: To reduce ground effect and make performance less reliant on ultra-stiff and low ride-height set-ups.
Safety Enhancements
- Two-stage front impact structure
- Improved side intrusion protection
- Increased roll hoop loads from 16G to 20G
- Brighter rear wing endplate lights
“With this set of regulations, the FIA has sought to develop a new generation of cars that are fully in touch with the DNA of Formula 1,” said Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA’s single-seater director.
These revolutionary changes are set to be ratified at a meeting of the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council on June 28, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of Formula 1.
