“Great to be first here in front of basically my home fans, my home grand prix,” Verstappen exclaimed afterwards.
However, it was Verstappen’s exceptional pace in the first and final thirds of the circuit that ultimately made the difference, securing him the top spot with a blistering 1m04.686s lap. The Dutch driver’s dominant performance was a testament to his car’s ideal balance, which he attributed to some key adjustments made going into the sprint quali session. As the Formula 1 calendar unfolds, Verstappen’s consistency and speed will be crucial in his championship bid.
Carlos Sainz slotted his Ferrari into fifth place, sandwiched between the Mercedes drivers, while Sergio Perez, Esteban Ocon, and Pierre Gasly filled out the top nine. Charles Leclerc’s technical issues forced him to abandon his SQ3 lap, relegating him to 10th place.
Kevin Magnussen’s SQ2 performance saw him produce the fastest first sector, but he ultimately ended up 11th, ahead of the Aston Martin pair of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso. The Formula 1 qualifying drama continued as Stroll narrowly avoided a massive moment at the final corner on his only attempt in SQ2.
Logan Sargeant led Alex Albon in the Williams battle, with the former’s last-ditch effort knocking Daniel Ricciardo out in 16th place. The Formula 1 standings are shaping up to be intense, and every position counts in the championship fight.
