Max Verstappen Downplays Red Bull’s Chances of Regaining Dominance at Spanish Grand Prix
As the Formula 1 schedule shifts focus to the European circuit, Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 champion, has tempered expectations regarding Red Bull’s chances of regaining its early 2024 dominance at the Spanish Grand Prix. Despite the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya being considered a strong suit for the RB20, Verstappen believes it will be challenging to replicate the team’s early-season success.
Formula 1 News Outlook
Formula 1 news indicates that the upcoming triple-header, featuring Barcelona, the Red Bull Ring, and Silverstone, marks a return to more traditional European circuits, which should favor Red Bull’s car. However, Verstappen remains cautious, stating, “No, I don’t think it will be like the beginning of the season.” While he acknowledges that the high-speed sweeps of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya should suit the RB20, he emphasized that rivals have been closing the gap on more technical circuits in recent weeks.
Verstappen’s Perspective
Verstappen expressed excitement about returning to a circuit that should favor his team but emphasized the importance of achieving the right balance. “We need to make sure that it’s in the right balance window,” he said. The Tag Heuer Formula 1 champion has previously voiced frustration about the team’s inability to optimize race weekends this year, citing engine issues in FP2 as an example.
Addressing Tensions
Dismissing suggestions of tension within the race team, Verstappen expressed confidence in Red Bull’s ability to execute race weekends. “It’s not tension, we always want to do well and we also know that other people are pushing flat out so we just need to have a good weekend like we always want to have it,” he said. Instead, he emphasized the importance of having a clean start to the weekend to overcome recent challenges.
