Formula 1 News: Yuki Tsunoda Confident in His Ability to Fight at the Front

As the Formula 1 season heats up, Yuki Tsunoda is declaring himself ready to take on the top teams, citing his growth into a “more complete driver” in his fourth season with Red Bull’s junior team, RB. The Japanese driver has long showcased flashes of speed, but his fiery temper has often held him back. However, Tsunoda has worked hard to get his emotions under control, a crucial step in achieving consistency and consideration for a seat alongside world champion Max Verstappen in Red Bull’s main team.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner appears unconvinced that Tsunoda has the steel to withstand the pressure of driving for the main team, and the 24-year-old has never been seriously considered to replace Sergio Perez. Despite this, Tsunoda’s contract was extended for a fifth season in 2025, although Red Bull’s driver line-ups are often subject to change.

Tsunoda’s speed and steady form have made him a valuable asset to RB, and he’s not shy about staking his claim for a Red Bull promotion. In an exclusive interview with Autosport, Tsunoda expressed his confidence in his abilities, saying, “> I feel I’m a more complete driver. When I look from an outside perspective, previously, even [though] my one-lap or performance or my driving was okay, I think the radio communications, emotional control was lacking quite a lot – a big step when I compare to Daniel, for example. If you want to go to a top team, those things will be very important because top teams are expecting a more complete driver.”

Tsunoda’s growth has not gone unnoticed, with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko offering his support. The Japanese driver is hoping that another consistent second half of the season will sway other voices within Red Bull. “> They know my performance and they are happy with my performance,” Tsunoda insisted. “That’s why they extended my contract for next year, so it’s pretty clear. I just have to keep performing, keep making them happy consistently, and, hopefully, things will come naturally.”

With 22 of RB’s 34 points this season, Tsunoda is feeling confident about his ability to fight against higher positions and teams, including taking on Verstappen. “> I just keep focused on what I can do, but obviously, I’m feeling ready to fight against higher positions and teams, and also fight against Max. But they have to decide.” As the Formula 1 calendar heats up, Tsunoda’s determination to prove himself could make for an exciting second half of the season.
